The Velux 5 Oceans is the oldest single-handed race around the world. Held every four years since 1982, it is the longest and most demanding race of all disciplines. Crossing solo the world's oceans on the thoroughbreds of the sea is an extreme adventure. To date, only 90 people responded to this challenge. Marathon around the world, it is composed of several sprints. The skippers will cross five oceans covering a total of 30 000 nautical miles. The race will start from La Rochelle; it will take off in October 2010 to return in May 2011 after stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Wellington (New Zealand), Salvador Da Bahia (Brazil) and Charleston (U.S.A).
